Yes, yes, YES! I have been thinking this for years. Members of my church often call a preacher an “evangelist.” Why was this, I wondered, since evangelism means to try to convert people.
But then I realized it doesn’t. Evangelize means to proclaim the Gospel. And the Gospel needs to be proclaimed to the lost and the saved alike. I need to be evangelized. I need to be infused with the Gospel, which is God’s power. It’s silly, and doesn’t capture the seriousness of the point, but I imagine a T-shirt with an energizer battery on it labelled “Evangelizer.” That’s what evangelism is: giving Christians their power source. What we call evangelism is just getting people in contact with the battery for the first time.

Thanks for the post and the links. My co-pastor and I have been slowing learning the what and how of the preaching that Keller exemplifies. I look forward to checking out Kaufman’s stuff too.
